Navigation:
The word navigation (Latin navis, boat; agire, guide) traditionally meant the art or science of conducting ships and other watercraft from one place to another. Ancient seafarers found their way by observing landmarks, such as large rocks or trees, along rivers and coastlines. When land was not in sight, measuring water depth, monitoring wind patterns, wave shapes and observing the position of the sun is how sailors could draw from clues as to their location. Technological advances have made navigation saver and efficient for both land and travel. Lighthouses have transformed from mere fires on a hill to super engineering structures, on and off shore. Illuminated by crucial inventions such as the Argand lamp and the Fresnel lens, these beacons give comfort and hope to those in peril on the sea.
