As ships leave the Long Island Sound and start
approaching the New York Harbor, they pass the Sands Point Lighthouse located on the
northwest shore of Sands Point in the Town of North Hempstead, Long Island.
Sands Point Lighthouse shares the same geographical vicinity with Execution Rock
Lighthouse and aided mariners past the rocky reefs from 1809 to 1922. The
lighthouse is constructed from freestone blocks and stands 80 feet tall. This
lighthouse fits in quite well with the beautiful north shore homes that dot the
shoreline. The lighthouse has been privately owned since 1924.The most famous
owner of the Sands Point Lighthouse was William Randolph Hearst, who held the
estate during the 1930s, often giving lavish parties. The current owner
has kept the lighthouse in its original form. .
Today, a skeletal light tower sitting off the Sands Point shore serves
the same purpose as the original lighthouse. On a clear day when
approaching the light from the north, you are able to see the New York skyline.
