Lighthouses of New York Harbor
New Dorp Lighthouse
New Dorp Lighthouse The New Dorp Lighthouse, built in 1856, acted in concert with The Elm Tree Lighthouse as a rear range light for the Swash Channel. The light tower atop the roof was originally fitted with a second order lens, showing a fixed red light. The optics changed in 1939, to a sixth order lens, showing a fixed white light. New Dorp light tower is 40 feet above ground and rises 192 feet above sea level. It remained operational until 1964, when the US Coast Guard deemed it unnecessary. The lighthouse has been under private ownership since 1974 and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The owner has maintained the exterior of the lighthouse in its original form.
