| The Blackwell Island Lighthouse is located in the East River,
at the northern end of Roosevelt Island. It stands 50 feet tall, for all New
Yorkers to see as they drive along the FDR Drive. The light can be seen in a
more leisurely way from the John Finley Walk near Gracie Mansion. For a
majestic view of the light with the city behind it, view it from 1st Street in
Astoria, Queens. Blackwell Light was completed in 1872 with the aid of convicts
from the local prison.
Blackwell Island Lighthouse is a Gothic style, octagon-shaped light made from gray
gneiss stone, which is found on Roosevelt Island. The light is part of
Lighthouse Park that can be visited. It is on the National Register of Historic
Places. |
